Katie Taylor was born on July 2, 1986 in Bray, County Wicklow, Ireland. Her father, an electrician by profession, was a fighter in the light heavyweight division and was the one who instilled a love of boxing in Katie.
In her amateur boxing career, Taylor won five consecutive gold medals at the Women’s World Championship, six gold at the European Championships and five gold at the European Union Championships.
She was the flag bearer for Ireland at the opening ceremony of the 2012 London Olympics, the same competition in which she managed to win a gold medal.
Taylor turned professional in 2016 under Matchroom Boxing and has achieved important triumphs that have led her to become one of the best female boxers of the world.
In a few days, Katie will undoubtedly have the toughest test of her successful career, as she will face another of the best fighters in the world, the Puerto Rican Amanda Serrano.
The fight will take place next Saturday at Madison Square Garden in New York and it will be the first time that a boxing event in this iconic arena is headlined by two women.
