Jermall Charlo retains WBC interim crown
World Boxing Council interim middleweight champion Jermall Charlo successfully retained his title for the first time by defeating the experienced Russian Matvey Korobov by a unanimous decision in the main battle of a card organized by the Premier Boxing Champions at the Barclays Center of Brooklyn, New York.
The Russian was impressive in the initial rounds. He deftly repelled Charlo’s attacks with quick buffeting counters and was very active, which prevented Charlo from dominating at either short and medium range.
Charlo magnificently fought back, turning the tide in the middle stanzas, but the Russian was still proving dangerous. The best of Jermall came in round 12, when Korobov was very close to be knocked out. The true grit champion won by decision 119-108, 116-112 and 116-112. Charlo increased and improved his pristine record to 29-0, 21 KOs, while Korobov fell to 28-2, 14 KOs.
