In the week of our fifty ninth annual Convention, the World Boxing Council is mourning the passing of Haiti`s premiere boxing promoter, manager, business leader and wonderful, loyal unforgettable friend Jacques Deschamps.
Jacques who was nicknamed “Jacky” by his friends…and they were so many, put boxing on the map in his beloved Hati and then extended it to other nations of the Caribbean and Central America. A highly successful businessman he was Chairman of the Board of Directors of Maison Henri Deschamps and President of the Chamber of Commerce of Industries of Haiti. Jacques was also Honorary Consul of the Republic of Turkey in Haiti and Director of the World Federation of Consuls.
Boxing was his great passion and through his company Boxe Internationale he made a great, innovative, diverse and a lasting impact. Jacques helped Edgar Sosa of Mexico, Anselmo Moreno of Panama and Nicolas “Axe Man” Walters of Jamaica, every step of the way, to world championships triumphs. Edgar successfully defended his WBC light flyweight title ten times! Jacques was also instrumental and fundamental in the careers of Bunny Grant and Richard Clarke of Jamaica as well as Winky Campfort and Evens Pierre of Haiti.
Charming, urbane, friendly and tremendously kind, Jacques used his consummate people skills to respectfully bring people and organizations together in unity, irrespective of obstacles. He once said: “It is impossible for a single person to organize a world boxing championship in Haiti. to do it and to achieve it, you must have the support of the government, the private sector and others. A world championship costs a lot!”
Jacques will forever be remembered and with gratitude, for all of those wonderful boxing gala nights at the Karibe Convention Center. Absolutely magnifique! He always had time and he took time to talk to anyone and everyone who shared his deep knowledge, affection and devotion to the Sport we so love.
A proud and so well-earned magic moment culminating from all his years of work and dedication, at the World Boxing Council`s fifty seventh Convention at the Grand Oasis Hotel, Cancun in 2019, when Jacques was awarded The Best Promoter of the Caribbean and Central America. It was presented to him amidst great applause, by Abraham Kahlil Mitra. No one deserved this more. It meant so much to him…and us!
Described as “The Main Promoter of Haiti`s International Boxing Success,” Jacky packed so much into his sixty-eight years.
Everyone at the World Boxing Council, its President Mauricio Sulaiman and the entire Boxing Family, offers deepest condolences to the family, so many friends and boxers that Jacques Deschamps Fils, helped along their way and paths and destinies. We have lost a Great and for that we are much the poorer, but simultaneously grateful and enriched in mind, body and spirit for the tremendous contribution and selfless legacy of this handsome, dignified and tremendous man, who loved to smile, laugh, joke and enjoy a live, so well lived.
We will never forget you Jacky. Rest in Peace Dear Friend.
