Irish Green Reigns Supreme: Callum Walsh wins US WBC 154 Lbs. Belt
Rising Irish boxing prospect “King” Callum Walsh realized his American Dream winning the US WBC Silver Super Welterweight Title, defeating Carson Jones by way of TKO in Round 4, at Hollywood’s Commerce Casino – broadcast on UFC Fight Pass.
In Round One, the Irishman boxed against type. Known for getting his opponents out early, with 6 previous knockouts, Walsh preferred a cautious approach over his veteran opponent, Carson Jones, a former world title challenger, giving him respect.
By Round 2, Carson Jones, a traditionally slow starter, started to apply some pressure. Walsh continued to work a variety of combinations; first the body, then head. Callum began dominating the fight. His punches were crisp, powerful and most importantly; consistent – making sure he didn’t over commit and drain his energy.
Round 3 saw Callum Walsh continuing to fluster his opponent with sneaky body shots, camouflaging the
body shots by feinting right hooks. A clash of head against the ropes saw Callum Walsh suffer an eyebrow tear that left blood streaming into his eye.
Callum Walsh opened up round 4 with a sense of urgency. Facing adversity with his injury, he quickly returned the difficulty by inflicting a nosebleed on Carson Jones. Walsh continued to pile on the pressure landing body shots. The onslaught was too much for Carson Jones, who buckled from the pain before taking a knee – as the referee waved off the fight, ruling it a K0.
Callum Walsh was thrilled to receive the WBC Super Welterweight title, commenting “take a good look at that.”
“That Carson Jones is a tough (expletive).I hit him with everything and I knew it was going to be tough. He does not go down easy and I made it look easy”
He brushed off any sense of danger with the cut he received, as he said :“It’s a cut – I don’t care. What am I supposed to do -cry about it? I’m in the middle of a fight. I’m used to that roughness at Wild Card – we don’t have easy spars and that stood to me tonight. I had to dig deep and get him up out of there.”
Walsh explained his gameplan:“I hurt him with a couple of body shots; I could see him wincing and I knew it was time for him to go. If I left him, he might have came into the fight later; I’ve seen him do that.”
“I made it look nice and easy. I got things to do – I’ve got a flight to catch tomorrow, back to Cork, Ireland with this belt – so I had to make it quick.”
His promoter, Tom Loeffler predicts a quick turnaround for Walsh to maintain momentum, predicting he will fight “… twice a year. We want to keep Callum active. This is the first of many titles guaranteed for Callum Walsh”.
Freddie Roach, his lead trainer from the famed Wild Card Boxing described his fighter’s performance: “He did great – he had a tough man in front of him. He took him apart with nice combinations; I give him an A plus. It was a big title tonight- I want a (another) big title soon.”
Callum Walsh had the final word of the night, announcing his arrival as a future boxing superstar – and issuing a warning to fellow Super Welterweights: “This looks good… you’d better get used to it. Everybody at 154 Pounds, remember the name ‘Callum Walsh’ – I’m coming.”
