The first boxing world championship in history is beginning, with four divisions: featherweight, super lightweight, middleweight, and heavyweight.
Each division will have 32 participants from every corner of the world.
The first stage of the tournament will be from April 17 to 20 at the BLVD City Global Theater in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. It will include 64 fights of 6 rounds each, spread across the 4 days of the tournament.
There will be no draws. The judges’ scores will be the same as in all boxing matches, but in the event of a tie, we will use the qualitative scoring system. To clarify, the judges’ scorecards have, in addition to the box for marking numerical scores (10, 9, etc.), a couple of boxes for the level of advantage by which the round was won: C (close), M (moderate), D (decisive), and E (extreme).
Each level is worth one point, and this is how the round will be scored and will serve as a tiebreaker.
Open Scoring. The official judges’ evaluations will be announced at the end of the second and fourth rounds, giving corner fighters the opportunity to adjust their strategy and also bringing greater transparency to our sport.
30-Second Buzzer. It will sound 30 seconds before the end of the round to prompt plus generate greater activity from the fighters.
Instant Replay. Any disputes that could change the outcome of the fight will be reviewed and scrutinized, to ensure maximum fairness in decisions.
Heavyweight Gloves. We’ve developed the Reyes Kings gloves, which are wider to accommodate the fists of larger fighters.
Green and Gold corner. We’ve replaced the traditional blue and red corner colors with our iconic colors.
All fighters will receive green and gold uniforms produced by Ready To Fight, a boxing agency with whom we’ve developed a variety of global solutions for our sport.
Each fighter, win or lose, will receive a beautiful medal handcrafted in Mexico. Additionally, all boxers have medical and accidental death insurance, which the WBC has implemented since 1977, another of Don José’s many initiatives.
The fights will be broadcast live worldwide on DAZN http://dazn.com/wbc
