The Green and Gold Belt is the zenith emblem of the World Boxing Council and the highest recognition for those who step into the ring, seeking glory.
In addition, the WBC has created a series of special and unique belts in order to reward and recognize the fights that have transcended excellence in the history of boxing, a special iconic trophy that Mexico and boxing gives to the fighters who face each other on the two most representative dates for Mexico, May 5 (Battle of Puebla) and September 16 (Independence Day).
The WBC has worked hand in hand with several entities highlighting their cultures through Mexican artisans who have transformed the WBC belt into true pieces of art, each one representing the best of their culture.
To recognize the most important fight of September, the WBC presents the “TAMAULIPAS II” belt, which has been inspired by the beautiful Cuera Tamaulipeca, a typical costume that represents this beautiful State. Made of fine suede with leather embroidery that represents this majestic region, achieving a perfect combination of all its elements.
The Tamaulipas II Belt will be awarded to the winner of the fight between the World Boxing Council super-middleweight champion, Saúl “Canelo” Álvarez against the Puerto Rican, Edgar Berlanga, on September 14.
This fight is extremely special for several reasons, including the fact that #CaneloBerlanga adds a new chapter to the Puerto Rico vs. Mexico boxing rivalry, in addition to the fact that the fight will be held in one of the most important boxing venues: The T-Mobile Arena of Las Vegas in September.
Saul “Canelo” Álvarez debuted in 2005 and has developed a career full of success and triumphs. During his brilliant career he has conquered the super welterweight, middleweight, super middleweight and light heavyweight divisions.
Canelo conquered the WBC 168-pound crown by defeating Callum Smith by UD on December 19, 2020 and has remained on the throne since then. Against Berlanga, he will make his eighth title defense.
Edgar Berlanga, 27, will have the opportunity of a lifetime to challenge Canelo for his world titles. Edgar was born on May 18, 1997 and since he was 7 years old, he began to forge his love for boxing. Currently, Berlanga has a record of 22-0 with 17 victories by knockout.
Today at our weekly press conference, the beautiful Tamaulipas II belt was presented, and this is what was said about it:
Mr. Benjamín Hernández Rodríguez – Secretary of Tourism of the state of Tamaulipas
The “Tamaulipecos” are very proud of the sporting legacy that your father (Don Jose) wrote in the state. Mauricio, your father was an illustrious citizen, whose mission changed boxing and the way we see this sport. Boxing is a tool for positive social transformation. Boxing represents access to social mobility and the creation of opportunities.
”Tamaulipas, through its governor, Dr. Americo Villareal, has believed in the power of this wonderful sport to transform lives and now in the framework of a historic boxing match starring Saúl “Canelo” Álvarez.
”This belt is a symbol of the cultural wealth and magic of the state. It invites us to discover its mountains, its rivers, its structures and its architecture. It represents the quality and warmth of its citizens.”
Mauricio Sulaimán
”Since 2017, the World Boxing Council launched this initiative to present commemorative belts on the most important dates in professional boxing and since then, each year a culture is selected to create these belts and present a tribute from Mexico to the world.
”Today, we have more than 35 years in which these dates the best fights from around the world are presented yearly. That date belonged to “Púas” Olivares, JC Chávez, Salvador Sánchez, then it passed to Oscar de La Hoya and Floyd Mayweather; now, “Canelo” has taken the baton and has been fighting for 10 years.
”Tamaulipas is very special to me and my family. My parents are from Ciudad Victoria. Historically, this region is very important, even Jack Johnson fought here. Great champions have come from this land. I am very grateful to Governor Américo Villareal and his team for promoting Mexican values and Tamaulipas culture to the world.
”This September edition of the Commemorative Belt is magnificent. This special recognition will be given to the winner of the Canelo vs. Berlanga fight, who star in a new chapter of the greatest boxing rivalry between countries: Mexico vs. Puerto Rico.”
