George Groves retires from boxing
British fighter George Groves, former World Boxing Council silver champion, confirmed his retirement from boxing, in a recent publication of Sky Sports News.
Groves (28-4, 20 KOs) fought for the last time against Callum Smith on September 28, 2018 in the World Boxing Super Series final. It was Groves’ fourth professional loss in his career, and although after that fight he insisted it would not be the last one, he now changed his mind.
In a recent statement on Instagram, Groves said: “After taking a little time to reflect on the recent events of my career, I have decided that it is time to retire as a professional boxer.”
“Some of you may think it’s strange that I decide to retire, I’m still young, I’m still fit and healthy, and there are still some important fights for me,” he added.
“But it’s for these reasons that I’m choosing to retire now, I have a young family at home and it’s time to spend some of my best days with them.”
“I do not want there to be a time when I’m ‘too old’ to box, or where injuries decide for me to get out of the ring. I am aware of the dangers of this sport, and I want to respectfully retire while I’m in great condition. ”
The World Boxing Council and its president Mauricio Sulaiman, wishes George a great success in his future plans.
