Galal Yafai will defend his WBC interim flyweight title against Mexico’s Francisco “Chihuas” Rodríguez on June 21 at the Resorts World Arena in Birmingham, United Kingdom.
Yafai, from Birmingham and a Tokyo 2020 Olympic gold medalist, enters this fight after stopping Sunny Edwards in six rounds last November.
That victory was a breakout performance for Yafai (9-0, 7 KOs), who now looks to take another step against veteran Rodríguez Jr., who is trained by Eddy Reynoso.
Rodríguez Jr. (38-6-1, 26 KOs) is a former strawweight champion looking to conquer a new division.
The winner will face WBC flyweight champion, Japan’s Kenshiro Teraji, currently one of the best pound-for-pound fighters.
The fight card will be broadcast live on DAZN.com/wbc
Both fighters faced each other for the first time in a press conference held this Thursday.
“I come very prepared for this fight; I didn’t travel this far to lose. Galal Yafai throws a lot of punches, but so do I,” said Rodríguez. “He’s never seen someone like me throwing punches with power.”
“I fought Sunny, I’m going to fight Rodriguez, and when I win I’ll have to travel to Japan to face Teraji. It’s not an easy task but I’m a warrior,” Yafai commented.
