The first thing WBC super-welterweight champion Sebastian Fundora told his Father Freddy after successfully defending his Green and Gold Belt, by defeating Tim Tszyu, was that he wanted to come to Mexico to celebrate.
It was at Martes A Cafe, that WBC President Mauricio Sulaiman presented him with the Aztec Warrior belt. He and Manny Pacquiao had jointly won the accolade for their extraordinary and outstandingly memorable performances on the same fight night in the same place.
So, Sebastian, Gabriela who is the undisputed flyweight champion…the only brother and sister championship team, together with their younger sister Fabiola aged eleven, who will have her first amateur bout in Mexico City`s Inter Lomas on Friday night, and their Dad Freddy who is their Trainer, have made the unforgettable journey.
Part of each trip to Mexico and there have already been several, includes a dinner at the exquisite China Girl Restaurant, Prado Norte, Mexico City, owned by Alfredo ”Freddy Hong.” A family business, which has been flourishing and blossoming for fifty two years, the family and the staff have perfected the cuisine and the entertainment which the Fundora`s enjoyed. It included, guitar music, salsa, opera arias, dancing and of course a raffle, laden with all sorts of prizes including WBC shirts, fans, blenders and bottles of tequila, for those who were sharp and quick enough off the mark, to rapidly answer boxing questions. As the song of Frankie Valli suggests: ”Oh What A Night!”
Loyalty is a value which the Fundoras greatly value. They met up with Freddy Hong at the WBC`s Acapulco Convention and the friendship ripened. Freddy explains: ”We are close friends, who contact each other frequently and I`m blessed to be in their inner circle. They love coming here to China Girl, which is a very family oriented place. We make everything here, so there`s a lot of variety of proteins and meat plus fish as well as a variety of sauces and vegetables. So, when you have these combinations which can be cooked in a wok, you have great vitamins and balanced nutrition. We have fifty two years to speak for and it speaks about us. We have done a dinner of champions five times with the Fundora family and we`re going to continue to do this, because we have a great time celebrating.”
Freddy Hong started the organization Por Amor Mexico in 2016 based around golf tournaments. But now it`s expanded into a focus of global sports on the suggestion of Freddy Fundora. The aim is to motivate and transform peoples` lives through sports. An international language and culture. Fit for champions but also involving everyone, because as President John F Kennedy said: ”It`s time for a new generation, for there`s a new World to be won.”
