Frankly Franchon
WBC female super middleweight champion Franchon Crews Dezurn wants to unify the division, and then fight a rematch with Claressa Shields, the only woman who’s put a dent in her otherwise unblemished record.
A barnstormer of a four rounder on both their debuts’ in which caution was often thrown to the wind as they slugged it out. Both connected hard on occasions. The Judges saw it as a UD for Claressa, and Franchin was the first to sportingly applaud.
That was then. The now is at the WBC Asian Summit and WBC Third Women’s Convention. Franchon said: “Of course there’ll be a rematch with Claressa. But I’m a champion myself. I’m doing my part to promote and push women’s boxing forward. In five or six fights if the money’s right and the platform is right, I’m sure and she will want to fight me too, because Claressa doesn’t back down from competition. But first we should clear out and unify our divisions.”
Franchon’s husband and late Mother are her inspirations but also: “I also represent a lot of underdogs. I want to build a legacy and show people who don’t have the opportunity, that you can go for your goals be successful.”
Franchon is convinced WBC Women’s Conventions are providing an impetus boost to the Sport. She said: “I’m very proud to be part of this one. The fact that it went from one, then two and now three! Maybe down the line we’ll have ten. I’m glad that all of these important people come to meet us and support us, is advancing Women’s Boxing.”
Franchon is also convinced that there will be a time when women boxer’s pay will have a significantly greater parity with men fighters: “Promoters are believing in Women’s Boxing, the TV networks are giving us opportunities not only in America, which is growing slowly but surely, but also in Mexico and Europe.
“So yes, I do believe and I fully Intend to do my part as an unprompted boxer to show that I don’t have all of these things, but I’m still a champion, I’m still marketable, and I’m still can push for what I want!”
