Sunny Edwards faces Galal Yafai this weekend for the interim WBC flyweight title, and both faced each other at a round table for the first time.
Edwards had his first loss at the hands of Jesse Rodriguez. However, in his most recent fight he defeated Adrian Curiel in a good performance.
Yafai, who only has 8 professional fights, is undefeated and has won 6 times by knockout. In his most recent appearance he defeated Sergio Oliva, being his second victory of 2024.
Edwards is the favorite in this fight since he has a victory over Yafai in amateur boxing. This was something they commented on in a press conference this Thursday:
“I am an Olympic gold medalist… There is history. He beat me in the amateurs. We have sparred. But we made things clear in November,” Yafai said.
“From what I can remember from that [amateur] fight, I was surprised. [This is] because I had been knocking people out. I was just a kid at the time.
Sunny is a good fighter. I have shared many rounds with him. I have watched him for years. He has watched me for years. People are going to think, yes, it is too early for him, but that is where I will prove them wrong.”
Edwards, meanwhile, commented:
“I am excited because, as I said, I usually have to do my job in the United States or somewhere else, to get good fights.
When I win this, I want to be ranked as world champion. Forget about the other two who are fighting for it. I don’t care about politics. If they give me a belt afterward, I will call myself champion.
I know I have to be in shape. I know I have to be ready, I have to be ready and I have to make the right decisions to beat him.”
