Don Miguel Acuña has passed away
The World Boxing Council is in mourning, as our great friend and magnificent ring official Don Miguel Acuña, died yesterday in McAllen, Texas.
Mr. Acuña had an outstanding career in the specialty to which he dedicated for himself in the sport. He invented the “RED CARD” system, which was introduced into boxing during the Annual Convention held in Johannesburg, South Africa, in 1998.
The card is a crucially important element for the protection of boxers, because it shortens the time in which a fight can be stopped. Just its showing by the ring doctor to the referee is sufficient to recommend that an immediate halt must be called.
Don Miguel Acuña was a totally dedicated to boxing. He visited us on several occasions in Mexico, since he was a close and trusted friend of our Presidents, Jose and Mauricio Sulaiman. He also traveled on many occasions to be present in the WBC Conventions as well as in meetings of judges and referees in different parts of the world.
Don Miguel Acuña Salas was born on July 10, 1933 in the Mexican capital and from a very young age he settled in Reynosa, Tamaulipas.
He is survived by his children Lourdes Leticia, Lilia Cristina, Monica and José Miguel, as well as 10 grandchildren. His first daughter, Maria Angelica, passed away some time ago.
Funeral services will be held at Rivera Funeral Home 1901, located on Pecan Boulevard, McAllen, Texas on January 22 from 11 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.
The entire WBC Family send our deepest condolences for a marvelous and constant friend, innovator and mentor. Don Miguel, you will always be remembered with love, fondness and gratitude.
Rest in Peace.
