Devin Haney will face Alfredo Santiago in the first defense of his WBC lightweight world title at the STAPLES Center in Los Angeles, on Saturday, November 9, live on DAZN in the USA and Sky Sports in the United Kingdom.
Haney (23-0 15 KOs) was named as absolute lightweight champion in the recent WBC Convention in Cancun, Mexico, after his dominant performance against Zaur Abdullaev in New York last September, where he was crowned 135-pound interim champion.
Haney will face Santiago (12-0 4 KOs), a talented undefeated Dominican fighter, who will try to derail Haney’s perfect progress.
“I’m happy we made this deal,” Haney said. “I am the WBC champion and I will defend my world title on November 9. I have been working hard and I am extremely focused. This will be the perfect gift for my 21st birthday.
“Alfredo Santiago is my next opponent; He is undefeated, hungry and comes to win. I take every fight very seriously and this fight is no different. We will surely see a great fight.
I would like to thank Matchroom Boxing and Fresh Productions for this opportunity,”
Santiago said. “This is the moment I have been dreaming of since I was a child, and the one I have been waiting for since I became a boxer. I am physically and mentally ready, and I will show who I am. The world will see a new world champion on Saturday. Haney is a formidable fighter who have just chose the wrong opponent. He can’t beat me.”
