The WBC has officially ordered the first defense of the super lightweight world championship for the undefeated Englishman Dalton Smith, who will face the dangerous Dominican contender Alberto Puello.
Following his spectacular victory last January, where he impressively stopped Subriel Matías in five rounds at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, Smith (29 years old) has established himself as one of the brightest figures in boxing today. As a reward for his brilliant performance abroad, his promoter, Matchroom Boxing, plans to bring this high-caliber matchup directly to his hometown, Sheffield, England.
“We’ll probably have news in the coming weeks, but I want to fight again in June or July in my city,” Smith told BoxingScene. “Whoever it is, it will be a great night. I like facing southpaws; we’ve already been studying him for almost a year. Puello is a great fighter, but there are no easy fights at the world level.”
The great momentum Dalton Smith is experiencing was reaffirmed this past Sunday when he received the prestigious Dennie Mancini award from the British Boxing Board of Control (BBBofC). This award recognizes his extraordinary performance against Matías, which has resonated throughout the global boxing community.
“Every fighter must have that fight where they answer many questions. I always believed in myself, but it was about proving it to the world and the boxing audience. I’ve already done it,” added the WBC champ.
Alberto Puello (31 years old), originally from the Dominican Republic, will arrive at this bout with the intention of snatching the green and gold belt from the local idol. Negotiations between the teams of both fighters are expected to finalize in the coming weeks to confirm the date and the exact venue in Sheffield, with the possibility of the event being held in a stadium to accommodate the thousands of fans awaiting their champion’s return.
