Brazilian Robson Conceicao became the new World Boxing Council super featherweight champion, defeating O’Shaquie Foster by split decision.
This was Robson’s fourth attempt at a world title. He lost to Oscar Valdez of Mexico in 2021 seeking the WBC super featherweight championship. In 2022 he spught the same title, losing to the American Shakur Stevenson, who did not make weight in that fight and last year he drew with the Mexican Emanuel Navarrete.
This is a great example of persistence, dedication and hard work. A demonstration that giving up is not an option.
In history there have been several similar cases, of boxers who established themselves after trying several times, for which we will remember.
German Torres
German lost in 1981 against Hilario Zapata in search of the WBC light flyweight title. In 1983 he sought the same title against Korean Jung Koo Chang. As it was a highly contested fight, there were 2 more fights against Chang, in 1985 and 1986, failing in both. His breakout moment came in 1988 when he defeated Korean Soon Jung Kang on his home turf, winning the WBC light flyweight title in his fifth attempt.
Marcos Villasana
Villasana challenged WBC featherweight champion Azumah Nelson in 1986, losing by split decision in an excellent fight. A rematch was held in 1987 but the outcome this time was even clearer for Nelson. In 1988 he went for the WBA featherweight title but ended up tying with Antonio Esparragoza.
In 1989 he sought the WBC featherweight title by facing Jeff Fenech but lost by decision. His moment of consecration came in 1990 when Villasana traveled to Manchester to knock out Paul Hodkinson in 8 rounds and was crowned WBC featherweight champion also at his fifth attempt.
Davila was crowned world champion until his fourth attempt. In 1978 he was defeated in 8 rounds by Carlos Zárate in search of the WBC bantamweight title. That same year he sought the WBA bantamweight title but lost to Jorge Luján. He had another opportunity to win the crown but he did not manage to defeat the tough Lupe Pintor. Alberto fulfilled his dream of being crowned WBC bantamweight champion by defeating Kiko Bejines in 1983.
Robson achieved this important victory at the age of 35, joining the select group of boxers who won a professional world title in addition to an Olympic gold medal, since he was champion at the 2016 Rio Games.
An unprecedented feat in Brazilian boxing.
Conceicao joins the list of historical Brazilian champions, namely Eder Joffre, Miguel de Oliveira, Acelino Popo Freitas, Valdemir Certan Pereira and Patrick Teixeira.
