WBC featherweight champion Rey Vargas who lives and trains in the shadow of Mexico’s Pyramids of the Sun and Moon, in breezy Otumba, State of Mexico held a convivial Lunch punctuated by heavy rock music… for the Mexican Media.
It was also an opportunity for WBC President Mauricio Sulaiman to present Silver flyweight champion Gabriela Sanchez with her belt. She vowed to work towards Green and Gold Absolute triumph.
Rey’s gym is dotted with state of the art bags of varying shapes, sizes and bulk, anchored to huge metal girders. As the Scots say: “Iron Bru.” Plus a ring of black and white ropes. No shades of gray.
Rey, who was accompanied by Mum Alejandra, Dad Carlos and the family remains pencil slim svelte and fighting fit.
Already a double world champion, a swish possibly Swiss watch, heavy gold bracelet and gold neck chain, display the trappings of success. But he’s very much down to earth, helping to arrange tables and a most solicitous host.
Mostly soft drinks accompanying the tacos. But belts of Scotch for the more hard bitten reporters and snappers. They were thick on the ground!
Rey says he ventured up to super featherweight, but after outgrowing super bantamweight, his natural weight is feather. He definitely wants to fight and defend his belt before year end and will abide by any mandatory set by November’s WBC Convention in Uzbekistan.
A bevy of Mexican classics and favorites but then surprise, surprise, the most welcome AC/DC Highway to Hell. Mauricio Sulaiman who’s quite a drummer, was absolutely brilliant with the band. He didn’t miss a beat! It brought the house down!
Appropriate tune, as we’re now back on the bus, making our way to Mexico City. Fasten your belts as it’s going to be a bumpy night?
Even better than Miners’ Fortnight.Max Boyce eat your heart out!
