Saul “Canelo” Alvarez, one of the very best pound for pound around and per round, is the winner of the prestigious ESPY 2019 Best Boxer award.
“I want to thank the ESPY awards for choosing me as the best fighter of the year,” said Canelo Álvarez. “And most of all I want to thank the fans for voting for me.
“I’m very grateful, thank you very much and we are going for more. With God’s favor, we are going to make the best fights and I will continue to be the best boxer. Thanks to all my fans, thanks to all the ESPYS people. You are greeted by your friend Canelo.”
With this award, the 28-year-old Mexican gets another important recognition. In addition to capturing titles in the super welter, middle and super middleweight divisions, Canelo is also recognized for having signed one of the most lucrative contracts for an athlete in the history of sports, after inking a five-year agreement with DAZN.
Oscar de la Hoya, who also captured an ESPY award for Best Boxer in 1999 and 2006, congratulated “Canelo” for obtaining this prestigious award.
“People all over the world are recognizing what we have been saying for years: Canelo Alvarez is the best boxer of the moment. He has a perfect mix of power, skill, courage and merchantability that has made him the great figure he is. Congratulations champion!”
