With the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas full to capacity and the fans roaring him on at the start of Mexican Independence Weekend, Saul “Canelo” Alvarez thoroughly, efficiently and brilliantly dominated Puerto Rican Edgar Berlanga.
Berlanga showed great heart, resolve and courage, always trying his utmost, but he was out thought, out witted, out maneuvered, outworked and outclassed from the outset.
Canelo’s victory was achieved by unanimous decision, to retain his WBC super middleweight title and it was convincing.
Befitting his status as an accomplished Maestro, in the third round, watchful and attentive “Canelo” brilliantly found, utilized and ruthlessly seized upon a momentarily careless lapse in concentration and thus defense by the Puerto Rican and with a powerful left hook, perfectly executed, he knocked Berlanga to the canvass. Realizing his costly error, Berlanga grimaced and banged his gloves together in sheer frustration.
Throughout the following rounds, both boxers exchanged blows with intensity and the fight went the distance. Berlanga did well to soak up and withstand a constant and unremitting cascade of power punches which increasingly landed on him.
Victories Canelo, reached 62 wins, 39 by knockout, with two losses and two draws; Berlanga suffered his first setback, after 22 wins, 17 by knockout. A creditable effort against an All Time Great.
The World Boxing Council awarded Canelo the “TAMAULIPAS II” belt, a magnificent gift from the WBC and from Mexico to the boxing world, recognizing the worthy winner of this great fight.
