After the “The Ring” magazine placed Saul “Canelo” Alvarez as the best pound per pound today, following his KO victory over Russian Sergey Kovalev on November 2, the President of the World Boxing Council, Mauricio Sulaiman says it’s a well deserved distinction.
Mauricio considers that Canelo has been the best since he defeated Gennady Golovkin, in September last year.
“These lists of pound for pound have their merit. Canelo has earned a very special place. I’m very pleased that this publication recognizes it, it. And this is something very valuable for Mexican boxing. I consider it a very fair decision of the specialist publication of our sport.
“We, in the World Boxing Council, declared prior to Fight two with” GGG, that the winner would be the best pound per pound. That night Saul got the victory and the right to be considered number one.’’
Although the ranking that has been published has generated diverse opinions, as there are those who place other world champions at the top, the head of the WBC said that; “there will always be controversy of who deserves to be number one, AS it is definitely a topic where there is debate. But for me it’s a well-deserved place.”
