This Monday, August 5, the inaugural press conference at the Palladium Times Square in New York, to announce the fight between Mexican Saúl ‘Canelo’ Álvarez and Puerto Rican Edgar Berlanga, on Saturday, September 14, at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
Since his return to Las Vegas, after his fight at the Akron Stadium in Guadalajara, Jalisco, this will be Saúl ‘Canelo’ Álvarez’s third consecutive fight at the T-Mobile Arena; in the previous fights, against Jermell Charlo and Jaime Munguía, he was a sold out smash hit.
Berlanga, ranked 9 in the WBC, is 27 years old and has an undefeated record of 22 wins with 17 knockouts. In his most recent fight he knocked out Irishman Padraig McCrory in the sixth round.
At the press conference, Berlanga was the first to come out, doing so shirtless, with a series of chains and jewelry around his body, and then… the champion, ‘Canelo’ Alvarez, came out, dressed all in black with sunglasses, proceeding to the first face to face between the fighters who promised a memorable battle:
“There are a lot of doubts out there about me, and a lot of hate, but I have faced adversity, I have faced hate all my life, it is my opportunity to become a great world champion, but also to be legendary in the sport of boxing. I want to thank everyone who came to support, September 14 will be something to remember. Puerto Rico vs Mexico, it is the biggest rivalry in boxing, we will seek to make history on September 14, it will be fireworks,” said Berlanga.
“I am very happy to be in this position, Mexico against Puerto Rico, I am not underestimating him, I know he is a strong, young fighter, and I am going to give my best in training, in the fight, and give a great, great fight. I am happy, I love boxing, I love what I do, and I am happy to be here. This fight will be a great one, and it will be a great day for Mexico,” said Canelo.
