The interim light heavyweight champion of the World Boxing Council, David “The Monster” Benavidez, successfully defended his title.
The Judges saw Benavidez as the winner with scores of 115-111 twice and 118-108.
From the start, the ‘Mexican Monster’ and the Cuban each had good moments in the first four rounds. However, by the fifth round, Morrell was slowly slowing down his pace, so Benavidez took control of the fight until the eleventh round. Confident of having control of his rival, Benavidez was surprised with the second knockdown of his career.
The victory was celebrated by the Las Vegas fans, who were mostly in favor of Benavidez, but Morrell left with his head held high, because he put up a great fight.
