Former American policewoman Tiara Brown was crowned the World Boxing Council featherweight champion by defeating Skye Nicolson via split decision on Saturday.
Brown, 36, took the belt from Nicolson after the Judges scored the fight 97-93 and 96-94 in her favor, with one of them 96-94 for Nicolson.
Brown (19-0) fell to the canvas in tears when her victory was announced. It was the first professional loss for Australian Nicolson (12-1).
Brown had been an officer with the Washington, D.C., Metropolitan Police Department and most recently with the Fort Myers Police Department in her native Florida.
Fort Myers Police had wished Brown good luck before the 10-round bout, saying on Instagram that she “has always been a warrior, both in and out of the ring.”
Brown is a boxing coach for the Fort Myers Police Athletic League.
Speaking to broadcaster DAZN, Brown thanked God and her hometown and said she had been looking forward to this moment for more than 20 years.
Nicolson, 29, had won the title in April by unanimous decision against Denmark’s Sarah Mahfoud in Las Vegas. Before facing Brown, Nicolson successfully defended the title twice.
