January 22, 1960.- Fireman Paul Pender, a favorite son of Boston, became middleweight world champion defeating the exceptional Sugar Ray Robinson, by split decision after 15 torrid rounds. The bout took place at the Boston Garden in Massachusetts. The Referee was Joe Zapustas. The Judges were Joe Santoro and John Norton. The Referee back then was also and incredibly expected to score the fight! He saw Robinson, as the victor. Six months a rematch concluded with exactly the very same result.
