A day like today, Carmen Basilio defeated Ike Williams
January 12th, 1953.- The immortal, Carmen Basilio, known also as “The Upstate Onion” defeated former lightweight champion Ike Williams by UD, over the duration of ten eye watering and one sided rounds. The fight in the welterweight division took place at the War Memorial Stadium in Syracuse, New York. The Referee of the slow burning match, was Pete Scalzo. The Judges were Ted Sheils and Jack Michaels.
