Legendary champion Christy Martin was a special guest at Martes de Café, where the trailer for her biographical film — starring actress Sydney Sweeney — was officially unveiled.
Visibly moved, Christy shared her excitement about the project:
“I’m happy to be back in Florida. We’ve been traveling all over the country promoting the movie, and now we’re heading to New York — but I can’t wait to go to Mexico.”
During the discussion with the media and WBC President Mauricio Sulaimán, Christy reflected on her life story and her lasting impact on the sport:
When Mauricio Sulaimán asked what it felt like to be the star of a movie, she said:
“I’m very happy that my story was told. I hope it helps more people speak out about domestic abuse so that it stops happening.”
Asked whether the process of making the movie helped her heal, she replied:
“Absolutely. Sharing my story and knowing it helps others makes me stronger.
On how she felt about her personal journey, she added:
“This movie helped me a lot because people would tell me I’m such a strong woman, yet they couldn’t understand how someone could tell me what to do — and honestly, I didn’t know what to say either.”
When asked about the future of women’s boxing and the pay gap between men and women, Christy reflected:
“Boxing is a business. It’s all about how many people you bring to the arena and how many pay-per-views you sell. Women shouldn’t be paid extra — they should be paid fairly for what they generate. Just look at Taylor vs. Serrano; they filled the arena and earned great money.”
Mauricio Sulaimán closed by inviting Christy Martin to Mexico to promote the film and celebrate her legacy as a pioneer of women’s boxing.
An inspirational story of strength, survival, and resilience — one that continues to shine inside and outside the ring.
