This past Saturday, July 19, Buenos Aires was the stage for a day that marked a turning point for the city’s amateur boxing scene. At the Club 17 de Octubre, in the Buenos Aires neighborhood of Flores, the Liga Metropolitana de Boxeo held its seventh event of the season, which had an extra special element: it was the start of the qualifiers for the WBC Amateur International Championship, to be held this October in Tijuana, Mexico.

Supervised officially by the Federación Argentina de Box, the event attracted a large crowd who filled the venue to cheer on their fighters. The opening remarks came from Marcelo “El Toro” Domínguez, former WBC world champion and a key figure in the League, who thanked Mauricio Sulaimán and the entire WBC team, highlighting the importance of seeing Argentine boxing return to the international spotlight under the WBC Amateur banner.
The evening showcased an impressive technical level across all weight categories. In the 60 kg division, victories by Gastón Sosa, Nicolás Tarragona, and Kevin Notario stood out. At 65 kg, Agustín Godoy, Deyvis Quispe, and Lucas Villalba delivered strong performances. In the 70 kg category, Valentín Coacci, Facundo Álvarez, Jonathan Fernández, and Jerónimo Filgueira came out on top. Finally, in the 75 kg division, David Morosini and Kevin Tapia secured key wins that put them in a strong position on the road to Mexico. The next date for the Liga Metropolitana is set for Saturday, August 2 at Club Platense, where the excitement of the qualifiers will continue.

But the good news for Argentine amateur boxing doesn’t stop there. From the center of the country, in the province of Córdoba, Lukas Rosales and César Coronel announced that in August they will launch the first national WBC Amateur tournament. This competition will take place over the course of the year and will end with bouts against teams from neighboring countries, making it a groundbreaking milestone for boxing in Argentina’s interior regions — something unseen for decades. It’s a true investment in the federalization and growth of Argentine amateur boxing.

With these two initiatives — the qualifying tournament in Buenos Aires leading up to Mexico, and the first nationwide championship in Córdoba — the WBC Amateur reaffirms its commitment to support, promote, and project Argentine boxers onto the international stage, betting on a sport that blends clear rules, ethical training, and real opportunities to shine abroad.
