Roman “Chocolatito” Gonzalez (46-1, 38 KO’s)   lost for the first time in his career, dropping a surprising 12-round majority decision against Thailand’s Srisaket Sor Rungvisai on scores of 114-112 (twice) and 113-113, with a result which was  roundly booed, following an  excellent plus competitive fight, which transformed into  an unremitting slugfest.

Fireworks flared early, as Roman  was shockingly knocked down in the first round.  Southpaw Srisaket drove a piledriver right into his ribs,  and down he went, both surprised and hurt, taking a count of eight, before getting back up.  Then the entire course of the fight transformed in the third round.  Emerging from a clash of heads,  Roman was jaggedly cut by the right eye, with blood pouring down his face.  Going up a gear, Roman pressed the attack landing right hands, but also getting clipped with hard  counter left hooks, from a physically bigger and stronger opponent, who`s a natural super flyweight, while he isn`t!

Roman was landing more frequently with appreciably greater hand speed, but getting rocked himself as Srisaket was sitting down on his punches, which appeared to be clubbing and heavier.  The Madison Square Garden crowd roaring Roman on, but Rungvisai (42-4-1, 38 KO’s) was right there with him, mostly impassive, but grunting in the later stages as he heaved cobblestone punches.  A clash of heads in the sixth, opened a small but deep cut on Roman`s hairline and his corner were having difficulty staunching the bloodflow from the other gash, which was spattering his face.  Another crack of heads in the sixth, brought a pause in the action and a point deducted from the rugged Thai.

Prior to the ninth round, the Ring Doctor came up to the ring apron for a long hard look at that deepening cut, which was masked with a liberal dollop of grease.  Roman was tiring in the tenth and eleventh round, but staged a grandstand finish, opening a deep cut by Srisaket`s right eye, which poured blood, long after the final bell clanged.  Roman who looked more stunned by the result than anything that had landed on him in the previous rounds, sportingly embraced Srisaket, and is requesting a direct rematch.
