On July 4, 1919, the World Heavyweight Champion since April 1915, Jess Willard faced Jack Dempsey with his crown  on the line in the city of Toledo, Ohio.

Dempsey, who was just 1.85mts with a reach of 196 cms faced Willard who  was  1.99mts in hight and had a reach 222cms. Despite this, Dempsey knocked down Willard with a left hook in the first round. It was the first time that Willard Visited the canvas and he did it 7 times in that first round. After the third round, Willard, severely beaten, could not continue and Dempsey was crowned  as the new world heavyweight champion.

After the fight it was rumored that Willard had suffered a fractured jaw, fractured ribs, several broken teeth and an indeterminate number of injuries to his face.
Willard said in an interview days later: "Dempsey is a memorable puncher. It's the first time I've been knocked down. After sending many rivals in th same direction. Now  I know how bad they felt"
