Many questions mark JC Chavez Jr’s return.

Many questions mark JC Chavez Jr’s return.

By Armando Zenteno C.

Julio Cesar Chavez returns Saturday night, in a determined bid to revamp his career, a year after loosing his WBC middleweight title. The on, off, on fight, which was originally scheduled for September 7th, was postponed due to a sliced right eyebrow Julio suffered in sparring, which needed stitches. This bout will now effectively be fought at light heavyweight, as the the weight has finally been agreed at 173 pounds.

Julio's opponent is 31 year old Texan Brian Lee Vera is fifth world ranked in the WBC middleweight division. It's been nine years since Brian's professional debut on August 27th 2004, when he defeated his countryman Avien Cooper. He's since won a regional middleweight title which he currently holds.

We first saw Brian six years ago in the boxing reality show "The Contender" which sponsored the television network ESPN in Los Angeles, California . He didn't exactly shine, because on his debut he was knocked out in the second round.

But Brian has persevered and significantly improved. He currently holds 23 wins with 14 KO’s and 6 losses. He's faced James Kirkland and Andy Lee. When he faces Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (46 -1-1 - 32kos) at the StubHub Center in Carson, California, the chance of a lifetime is right there in front of him.

As for Julio, this'll be the first time that the audience and the television, will see his father Julio Cesar Chavez Gonzalez in his corner. Dad brings the savvy, knowledge and undisputed brilliance from a fabled career, but he must temper his strong and sometimes explosive character, which has sometimes been the barrier between him and his son in the past.

For now the preparation in the gym sessions have been done by Vladimir Baldenebro while Alejandro Ariza was responsible for physical preparation. Another question is to see whether Freddie Roach takes the lead role in driving tactics in Jr’s corner and if he'll allow collaboration from Dad?

The winner of this crucial crossroads contest, will face Marco Antonio "Veneno" Rubio for the WBC Interim middleweight title, while Sergio "Maravilla" Martinez recovers from the injury to his left hand. Whoever emerges from this will then fight for the absolute title next year.
